01Between Worlds

Learning to See Across Systems

Raised in Beijing, Duanni came to the United States to pursue graduate studies in communication and media, with a focus on interpersonal and intercultural communication and the social influence of mass communication. She later made California home, building a decade-plus career in technology while navigating life across cultures, industries, and ways of thinking.

Moving between worlds taught her to pay attention to how people understand one another—and to the larger systems that shape their choices, relationships, and lives. That habit of looking across boundaries would become a through line in everything that followed.

02Building From Lived Experience

When a Family Experience Became a Calling

A family health crisis brought Duanni face-to-face with a fragmented world of care—one in which families were expected to make consequential medical, caregiving, financial, and legal decisions while often lacking the information and guidance to navigate them. The experience changed the direction of her work.

She founded Starlight Caregivers and spent more than a decade operating on the front lines of aging and care, working alongside older adults and families through some of life’s most difficult transitions. What began as an effort to help families navigate care became an education in how the larger system actually works—and where it repeatedly fails.

Those years revealed a pattern: the crises families experience in later life rarely belong to one category. Health affects care; care affects finances; finances intersect with legal preparation, family relationships, social support, and community. The problems are interconnected, yet we too often prepare for them separately—or only after a crisis has begun.

How might we prepare for longer lives before crisis makes the decisions for us?

03From Experience to Ideas

Turning Experience Into a Framework

After more than a decade inside aging and care, Duanni began to see the same pattern repeat: families were not struggling because they had failed to plan for one thing. They were struggling because later life depends on multiple systems that are deeply interconnected, yet too often considered separately—or only after something goes wrong.

Those observations became Aging by Design, a framework for approaching longer lives with greater intention. It brings together six interconnected systems—medical, care, financial, legal, social support, and community—and asks us to think about them not as isolated concerns, but as infrastructure for human flourishing in later life.

At its heart is a simple premise: longevity without infrastructure leads to crisis. Aging by Design shifts the conversation from reacting to aging toward designing for it—earlier, more intentionally, and across the systems that shape how we actually live.

Today, Duanni is developing these ideas through her writing, educational videos, public speaking, and a book in progress, translating years of firsthand experience into a body of work for individuals, families, communities, and the people building the systems around them.

“Aging is the one design problem the entire population eventually faces. We have, somehow, agreed to face it last.”

04Community as Practice

Flourishing Happens in Community

Community has been a continuous thread in Duanni’s life, through years of civic leadership, nonprofit service, mentoring, and work across generations. These experiences have reinforced something she has also seen through her work in aging: a good life depends not only on health or financial security, but on belonging, contribution, relationships, and shared purpose.

That conviction informs Aging by Design. Community is not simply something we need when we grow older; it is something we build throughout our lives. Designing for longevity means creating the relationships and places where people can remain connected, contribute to others, and continue to find meaning.

05What I’m Building Now

Helping Build the Systems We’ll Need Next

Duanni brings her experience as a technology leader, founder, and aging life care operator to early-stage companies and organizations building better systems for healthier lives and stronger communities. As a strategic advisor, she helps founders navigate market realities, operations, partnerships, customer needs, and the challenge of turning promising ideas into solutions that work in the real world.

She also selectively invests in companies aligned with these interests. For Duanni, advising and investing are another expression of Aging by Design: not only identifying the gaps exposed by longer lives, but supporting the people and ideas working to build what comes next.

06Arts, Culture & Place

Curiosity Is Part of a Life Well Lived

Art, culture, and travel are enduring sources of curiosity and discovery for Duanni. She writes about performance, architecture, museums, food, and places near and far— exploring how beauty, history, culture, and experience can move us, challenge our perspectives, and expand how we see the world.

This creative lens is also part of how she thinks about human flourishing. A longer life is not simply about adding years or preparing for what might go wrong. It is about remaining curious, engaged, connected, and open to experiences that give those years meaning.

“Writing about art and place is, for me, another way of practicing attention.”

Biography

Duanni Hurd

Founder, writer, and strategic advisor.

Duanni Hurd is a founder, writer, and strategic advisor whose work explores a central question:

How do we build better systems for the way people actually live?

Her perspective was shaped first in high technology. For more than a decade, Duanni worked across foundational GPU and CPU industry cycles in product management, channel sales, and business development. The experience taught her to look beyond individual products and outcomes to the infrastructure, incentives, relationships, and execution that make complex systems work.

Her move from technology into aging and care was deeply personal. Duanni’s mother, an engineer, retired early to spend 15 years coordinating home care for her father, who lived with Parkinson’s disease. During those years, Duanni was building a demanding technology career, raising young children, and helping her family navigate her grandfather’s increasing needs. She experienced firsthand the pressures of the sandwich generation—and saw how often families are expected to hold fragmented systems of care together themselves.

Coming from technology, Duanni saw a systems problem.

In 2013, she founded Starlight Caregivers and later Footprints Living Assistance. More than a decade working inside the care economy gave her a ground-level view of the realities of longer lives: healthcare, caregiving, housing, finances, legal planning, families, and communities are deeply interconnected, while the systems supporting them often are not.

Those experiences became the foundation for Aging by Design, Duanni’s evolving framework for approaching longer lives intentionally rather than waiting for crisis to dictate decisions. Through writing and speaking, she explores how stronger systems, environments, relationships, and choices can create greater agency and resilience—and enable human flourishing in later life.

Since 2023, Duanni has written a monthly column for the Los Altos Town Crier and shares her thinking through talks, panels, podcasts, and short-form videos. She also advises early-stage founders and organizations building solutions for healthier lives and stronger communities.

Community service has been another continuous thread in Duanni’s life. A member of the Rotary Club of Los Altos since 2013, she has served on its Board of Directors, as Membership Director and Satellite Club Chair, and was honored with the Guy Shoup Rotarian of the Year Award for 2021–2022. Her service spans generations: she has served on the board of Mentor Tutor Connection, supporting students in Mountain View and Los Altos public schools, and as a member and board member of the Mountain View Los Altos Service League of Boys. Together with her work supporting older adults and families, these experiences reflect a longstanding commitment to strengthening communities across the lifespan.

Beyond her systems-oriented work, Duanni writes about art, architecture, performance, food, and travel—exploring how beauty, culture, place, and experience shape what it means to live well.

Across these different chapters runs one conviction: better lives are shaped by the systems, relationships, environments, and communities we build around one another.

“Better lives don’t happen through individual choices alone. They are shaped by the systems, relationships, environments, and communities we build around one another.”
